History

Elstree was originally an estate, world famous for its gardens and in its heyday employing up to 70 gardeners. It became a country club with a polo ground, and as flying was considered extremely fashionable at the time, many of the polo players owned and kept private aircraft on the site. During the war a concrete runway was laid and the present hangars built for use modifying Wellington Bombers. The flying club continues to this day, with a control tower one of the last major additions to the site.
