Steam Train Driving Experience

Under the guidance of an expert driver this experience gives you the chance to drive a steam train. Perfect for any train enthusiast, a train yard tour and a chance to see the inside of a signal box is also included.

Have you ever dreamed of being a train driver and experiencing the thrills of driving one of the most impressive trains ever built? If the answer is yes then this truly is the perfect experience for you. This is a full day of locomotive fun and action. You will learn about the history of the steam train, undoubtedly the most beautiful train ever built, and then you will learn all of the various skills and techniques that are required to actually operate one of these monstrous machines.

Throughout this unbelievable locomotive experience, you will be accompanied by an expertly trained instructor. They will not only ensure that you are completely safe during the day, but they will also be on hand to answer any questions that you may have about the train. They will teach you how to control the power of the train, so that you can smoothly start and stop them with ease.

The crowning part of the entire experience is when you are given the chance to slowly “buffer up” the impressive steam train to an enormous 25 tonne brake van. It is a truly incredible ending to a breath-taking day.

"Thank you so much."

There is no real way to describe the sheer joy of this. My kids remember playing with the model railways of their childhood, well, I played and they watched. I have always been a sucker for the steam age, they remembered and this was my 60th birthday present from them and I was overwhelmed both by the the gesture and by the day itself. I never thought I would get to ride in one of these, never mind actually getting into the engine room and controlling one. This was an absolute dream come true and Experience Mad deserve thanks too.

Your Questions Answered

How many people take part in this session?

There will be 8 people taking part in the experience and they will be paired off into groups of 2.

Are spectators able to come along and watch?

Spectators are welcome to come along to take pictures but unfortunately they are not able to come on-board the train or carriages. As this is a whole day experience there isn’t much for a spectator to do on site and so it is not recommended that they stay for the entire session.

Are you able to tell me where this event is held before I make my booking?

There is just the one location in Kent which is a place called Tenterden.
