We brought my 15 yr old son the first drive experience for his birthday. He had a great day and his instructor Dave was very friendly and had a great sense of humour which made the boys in his group at ease. As we watched it made us smile as the 3 boys had big grins on their faces!! My only very small complaint is that we left Oxford at 6.30am and we were looking forward to breakfast but nothing was open at Rockingham racing circuit. But that never stopped a great day - THANKYOU

The Jumbo Express at Whipsnade Zoo is a powerful steam train which you will have the chance to drive whilst taking in the sights and sounds of the zoo. This really is a once in a life time experience!

Ever wanted to drive a train, but never had time for extensive training? If so, now’s your chance! This experience promises the chance to be a steam train driver for the day, on the Jumbo Express at Whipsnade Zoo. This powerful steam train will be a real joy to drive, and will give you the opportunity to absorb some of the breathtaking views that the zoo has to offer.

While travelling round the zoo, you’ll be able to observe deer, camels, Asian elephants and even Indian rhinos. Furthermore, you’ll be offered a behind-the-scenes experience of the railway yard, where you’ll find out what a typical day of being a steam train driver is like. Lunch and snacks are provided during this authentic and traditional experience. A great family day out, or even a chance to have fun with some friends, this great experience is perfect for those wishing to broaden their horizons and accomplish something a little out of the ordinary.

  • Take part in all the jobs of a steam train driver.
  • You will shovel coal, couple carriages, test brakes and control the steam train.
  • Hop aboard the Jumbo Express and drive it for 8 miles along the 2ft 6in narrow railway.
  • Lunch and refreshments are included.
  • Your day will run from 9:00 am - 3:30 pm.

Notes and Restrictions

  • Min age - 18 years, No maximum age.
  • You must be reasonably fit with decent hearing and vision.
  • You must be able to climb up and down vertical steps between the footplate of the locomotive and ground level (at least 6 inches/15cm).
  • This experience is suitable for beginners and for those with some train driving experience.
  • Voucher cannot be extended.
